A drinking story. Two men drink too much and hobble home, only to find that they have ended up in the wrong town.
There’s not a ton to say about this story! It’s a decent portrayal of drunkenness, but let’s face it, reading about someone who is drunk is not terribly interesting. Maybe if you’re drunk yourself…
READ THIS? READ THAT!
Chekhov wrote a half-a-dozen tales about people drinking too much, but none of them are among his best. There is “Drunk,” which is an ugly portrait of an angry drunken man, and “An Adventure,” in which a drunken fellow lets slip that he’s carrying a great deal of money, which leads to his murder. And then there is “The Chemist’s Wife,” in which two drunken louts harass the proprietor of a pharmacy. “The Marshal’s Widow” is a gentler story of mourners nipping into the coatroom for a quick drink during a memorial gathering, and “An Inadvertence” tells the slightly amusing story of a man who drinks paraffin by accident, having had too much to drink at a party. There’s others, I suppose, but one more in particular comes to mind: “Grisha,” which is the story of a very unlikely drunk. He’s not even three years old yet.
